Artist Spotlight: Shauna Cagan, Art In Motion
In continuing the Maplewood Division of Arts & Culture mission of ensuring inclusive and accessible art for all, this week’s featured artist is Shauna Cagan with Art In Motion and the Maplewood Arts Council. Residents can safely enjoy public art while outdoors, maintaining physical distance.
“I am generally obsessed with repeating patterns, and was excited to be able to combine this with my adoration for our two towns. Also, I’m always interested in doodles and simple drawings of all sorts.”—Shauna Cagan
Shauna Cagan is a freelance designer and illustrator. Shauna also teaches at the Maplewood Outside School and, given the current state of things, in her living room for her own kids, who attend Seth Boyden Elementary School in normal times. In addition to designing, drawing and teaching, Shauna spends her days gardening. Shauna’s drawings often reflect the many hours she spends outside, immersed in weird and wild places. Shauna lives in Maplewood with her husband and two feral, mostly bare-chested boys.
“I’ve been a graphic artist for a long-ass time, specializing in illustration, and print / design, with clients that range from Business Week Magazine to the New York Department of Education and everything in between. My work combines strong design fundamentals, a clear visual sensibility and a bit of cheek.”
“I work closely with photographers and designers to create projects that are beautifl, that have impeccable craftsmanship, and that stay on budget and time.”
“I want to make the work sing.” —Shauna Cagan

Art In Motion, presented by the Maplewood Arts Council (MAC), is a collection of eight paintings that hang on the tunnel walls of the Maplewood Train Station underpass. MAC received 100 applications solicited from artists living along the Morris and Essex train line. 100% of donations for Art In Motion went to paying the artists for their work, and for the installation and maintenance of the paintings. Major sponsors for Art In Motion: The Able Baker, [words] Bookstore, Pollock Properties Group, and Michael Choy & Shannon Moffet. Big thanks to NJ Transit, and Maplewood’s Department of Public Works.
